INTRODUCTION TO QUANTUM PHYSICS

 By

    Dhruva S. Banavara

As always, first things first, of course, the basics. So, what is quantum mechanics?

It is the theoretical basis of physics which explains the nature and behavior of matter and energy in very small scales. The compilation of the nature and behavior of matter and energy is referred to as quantum physics or quantum mechanics.

Its uses??

i. The principles Quantum theory is used in the creation of atomic clocks, which are considered to be the most accurate.
ii. It has uses in Electron microscopy, all thanks to Quantum Mechanics. See, Quantum Mechanics advocates that a particle can behave like a wave also. Electrons are particles, but their manifestation as a wave is used in electron microscopy. This causes variations in its resolution; as a result, we can observe finer images. The electron microscope can observe images and stuff which is not possible in a normal microscope.
iii. MRI Scanning (Magnetic Resonance Imaging), This relies on unique Quantum mechanical phenomenon which gives the atomic nuclei of the human body their own magnetic fields, which are then observed by the imaging.
iv. Lasers; they use quantum mechanical phenomenon which allows it to produce inphase light, which deviates very little.

Classification

Quantum Mechanics incorporates a few classes of phenomena for which classical physics cannot account for:

-Quantum Entanglement

-Principle of Uncertainty

-Wave-Particle duality.

Quantum Entanglement

This is a quantum mechanical phenomenon in which the quantum states of two or more objects have to be described with reference to each other, even though the individual objects may be spatially separated.

In Physics, the entanglement of particles describes their fundamental properties that can’t happen by chance. This could refer to states such as their momentum, position, or polarization.

Principle of Uncertainty

The Uncertainty principle, also known as the Heisenberg Uncertainty principle, articulated by German Physicist Werner Heisenberg, that the position and the velocity of an object both be measured exactly, at the same time, in theory. The very concepts of exact positon and exact velocity together, in fact, have no meaning in nature.

Wave-Particle Duality

Wave Particle Duality holds that light and matter exhibit properties of both waves and of articles.

A central concept of quantum mechanics, duality addresses the inadequacy of conventional concepts like “particle” and “wave” to meaningfully describe the behavior of quantum objects.

Well, that’s all for the introduction for quantum mechanics. Hope you liked it…
